1. OBJECTIVES: The primary objectives are to provide an opportunity to learn the sport of Track and to provide maximum participation in a series of track meets. The fundamentals of both track and field are taught.
2. EAST CATHOLIC STRIDERS: The ECS track team is a combined team from 5 parishes: Ascension, Immaculate Conception, St. Anthony, St. Helen, and St. Luke. We run as a combined team to maximize participation in the CYO Relays, to make optimum use of the Carroll track, and to provide qualified track and field coaches for our athletes. We do accept athletes from St. Brigid and other catholic schools subject to the CYO track rule on parishes without track teams. Ascension is the paying parish for 2010 - please make checks payable to ASCENSION ATHLETICS for $40 per athlete if you signup at a parish or at Carroll High School in March.
3. Team organization: CYO track has six age groups; 9/10 girls and boys, 11/12 girls and boys and 13/14 girls and boys. Your group is determined by your age on September 30, 2010.
4. Eligibility Limitations: You can not compete for any other track team from April 3, 2010 to May 16, 2010.
5. Practice: All practices are held at Carroll High School on Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 6:00 PM until 7:30. A large team may require earlier or later practice times. We require attendance a minimum of TWO practices a week. THREE practices a week by an athlete will yield optimum results in competition. We MAY schedule optional Saturday practices.
6. SHOES: We recommend a quality running shoe that is properly fit. Only running shoes or running flats without spikes are permitted in CYO competition. There are many fine running shoe stores in the greater Dayton area. Endurance Sports, 6056 Wilmington Pike, ( just south of I-675 in the Sugarcreek Plaza) will likely give you a 10% discount if you identify yourself as running with the East Catholic Striders track team or a member of a CYO track team.
7. UNIFORMS: As part of the registration fee, an ECS uniform shirt is provided and is yours to keep. Shorts are not provided. Navy blue running shorts are to be worn for all meets with the uniform shirt. No jewelry, earrings, wristbands, or watches may be worn at meets. Medical/ religious medals need to be taped to the inside of uniform shirt. We recommend taping the medal to outside of a regular t-shirt and putting the uniform shirt over it.
8. PRACTICE/MEET CLOTHING: During practice at Carroll HS and at Meets, the temperature changes rapidly. Layered clothing is recommended. Athletes need to come prepared with the proper clothing (labeled with the athlete’s name) for all weather conditions (gloves, hat, coat). We acquire quite a bit of lost clothing during the season. We will call you if there is a name in the clothing and do keep the lost clothing until the end of the season.
9. INCLEMENT WEATHER: We will call cancellation to the five primary schools if weather conditions have deteriorated by noon. An automated calling system will be used to notify families of cancelled or delayed events. A coach will be at Carroll for any athlete who misses the cancellation notice.
10. MEET SCHEDULE AND COACHES LIST: A meet schedule and list of coaches will be provided as soon as possible after practice starts.
11. RUNNING EVENTS: 100m, 200m, 400m, 800m, 1600m, plus 3200m and Hurdles (only 11/12, 13/14) and a variety of 4 person relays.
12. FIELD EVENTS: Long Jump, High Jump, Shot Put, and Discus (only 11/12, 13/14).
13. MANDATORY MEETS: Participation in the two CYO Relays and Championship Meet are normally required. The Relay Meet is almost always held on the last Sunday in April (4/26/08). The Championship Meet is held on the third or fourth Sunday of May (5/17/08). If an athlete can not be at these two meets, you must discuss the problem with the Head Coach before April 9, 2010. Please let your age group coach and Head coach know if you have any religious or academic events that conflict with these dates as soon as possible.
14. SPRINT TRIALS: The CYO Sprint Trials meet held two weeks before the Championship (5/3/08) qualify the top 8 in the 100m, 200m, 400m, and Hurdles for the CYO Championship. Top three ESC sprinters of each age group should keep this meet day open because this is the qualifier for the Open Sprints at the Championship Meet. Athletes who finish in the top eight in the Sprint Trials must be at the Championship Meet. If you qualify in the Sprint Trials and do not come to the CYO Championship, your lane is left open. Thus a teammate or another CYO athlete is prevented from participating in the championship meet.
15. PARTICIPATION: Participation is almost equal for all meets except the CYO Championship. Some athletes may be limited to two running relays in the championship meet due to entry limitations.
16. FIELD EVENT PRACTICE: The practice time for field events is affected by weather, group size, and number of first year participants. Clearly, it is impossible to practice all team members in every field event. We do the best we can using the following general guidelines: Try everyone early, then select the top 4 to 7 in each event for practice the two or three weeks before the CYO Relays. We make note of all who can safely do each field event. Find out each team member’s favorite field event. Use the practice meets for those not in the top 4 to 7 who can safely do a particular field event. Use the week after Relay Meet to give the non top 4 to 7 a chance to practice field events.
17. PARENTAL INVOLVEMENT: The Striders coaches need help from parents in several ways. A) Volunteer to help coach if you have knowledge, experience, or time to share with the athletes during practice times. B) Assist the team by bringing ice, water, drinks, or snacks to the meets. C) Assist the coaches with athlete organization at the meets – we all want athletes to compete in assigned events at these meets. D) Assist the coaches with tracking and labeling awards and ribbons. E) Help with the picnic and awards ceremony at the end of the season. E) At minimum, try to transport your athletes to practices and meets on time. Volunteers serve the team with the approval of the Head Coach. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2010 CYO Track Sign-Up for All 3rd – 8th Grade Students East Catholic Striders Track is a parish CYO program open to all 3rd through 8th-grade students, regardless of their current school (PSR students welcome!). The Striders team is Immaculat Conception's official CYO track team and competes with students from six local parishes as a combined team. Striders emphasizes learning the basics of track and field events. Athletic 8 year olds may compete as 10 and Under. The team provides a very experienced coaching staff, but is looking for patient parents to serve as new coaches. The cost to compete will be $40 per athlete and checks must to be made out to Ascension Athletics. Track is a great way for soccer and basketball players to keep in shape and learn new skills. Come join the fun and help us field a strong team. Contact for CYO track is Jim Martz at 427-0668, and sign-up forms can be obtained from the school office or by calling Coach Martz.
